Using the same pattern as the quilt above, I chose fabrics of cool blues and greens for this beauty. This changes the mood entirely, and makes you think spring has arrived. Some popular fabrics are just too beautiful to cut into little pieces, so Hip To Be Square is a perfect pattern to show case these large floral fabrics. One of my life long friends, Sharon Batson, is recovering from breast cancer. This quilt now belongs to her. Sharon totes her quilt to her hospital treatments inside a handy pillowcase (made of the same fabrics.) Speedy recovery to Sharon |
Of all the colors in the garden, I'm drawn to the red dahlias. Our own garden was filled with blooms, but this picture comes from the Swan Island Dahlias in Canby. That's a place you must visit next Labor Day weekend. You will get hooked, as we did, and you will want to buy one of every color for your own garden.
Portland is home to one of the largest quilt shows in the Northwest. It is a judged and juried show, so having your quilt selected to be in the show is a big deal. (at least for me). I was so proud to see my Family Reunion quilt hanging at the Northwest Quilting Expo this past September.
The family tree in the center has the names of every aunt, uncle and first cousin on my mother's side. There's a lot to look at. There are fun quotes and verses, including my favorite Bible verse, Malichi 4:6 There's potato salad, watermelon, lemonade, and my favorite, the old ice-cream maker.
Check out their web site. Perhaps you will have a quilt you'd like to put in the 2016 show. . http://www.nwquiltingexpo.com

Our little quilt guild, Scrappy Valley Quilters, has been quilting together for many years. The past two years we have done charity quilting. In this grouping, we used a simple pattern called "rails". In turning the blocks one direction, and then opposite of the preceding one, you get a secondary pattern as if the blocks were "woven".
These bright children's prints are so fun, and will bring a smile to an innocent child, abused and removed from their home. This charity is Cares Northwest.

I would encourage each quilter to consistently spend a percentage of their time to quilt for charities in our area. You will be highly rewarded for your generosity.
If you have questions about this charity, you could also call The Pine Needle in Lake Oswego. They will be glad to help you.

If you love African prints, you'll be amazed with this quilt made by Lee Prentice. I enjoyed quilting around the wool characters, all appliquéd in high detail with beading and embellishments. This picture does not include some additional beading and earrings added after the quilting was complete. Congratulations, Lee.
